International police crack down on cybercrime, recovering $97.4 million and busting a large-scale Crypto Assets scam.
On August 22, according to reports, the International Criminal Police Organization announced on Friday that its coordinated "Serengeti Operation 2.0" has successfully arrested 1,209 individuals suspected of cybercrime, who collectively attacked nearly 88,000 victims. It is reported that this operation involved investigators from 18 African countries and the United Kingdom.
The operation began in June of this year and has so far recovered $97.4 million in funds and dismantled 11,432 malicious infrastructures. During the operation, Zambian authorities dismantled a large-scale online investment fraud scheme that promised high returns through advertising campaigns, luring around 65,000 victims to invest in cryptocurrency, with an estimated scam amount reaching $300 million.
In Angola, investigators dismantled 25 cryptocurrency mining centers, arrested 60 Chinese citizens for illegally verifying blockchain transactions, and seized mining and IT equipment worth over $37 million.
