Ron Paul and Elon Musk: Effective Government Reform Collaboration Under Trump
While President-elect Donald Trump is assembling his transition team, much attention is focused on the newly formed Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE. Long-time libertarian advocate and former congressman Ron Paul recently shared that Elon Musk approached him for assistance with DOGE. Paul, a staunch libertarian, emphasized that he would be "very willing to bring sobriety". Can Ron Paul 'bring sobriety' to Washington? Excitement is building around DOGE, a federal efficiency program led by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. With ambitious goals, DOGE aims to overhaul the federal government by simplifying operations, reducing the workforce, promoting regulatory reform, and enhancing transparency—all aimed at ultimately reducing costs across the entire US government. Former Congressman Ron Paul has been invited to join this power duo. Free market advocates and individual liberty supporters are optimistic that Ron Paul could be the missing piece to realize this ambitious vision. In a recent op-ed, David Gornoski of Antiwar.com cleverly argued that 'to unleash DOGE hunting garbage, it needs Ron Paul to activate it'. "Ron Paul brings a gold standard of commitment to truth and conservative finance," Gornoski writes. "His lifelong support for cutting government based on constitutional principles and natural law makes him uniquely qualified. No one is more credible in trying to help America avoid financial collapse than Ron Paul, who has been issuing warnings and efforts since the 1970s." On November 22, Paul went to X and explained that Musk had asked him to help DOGE "Elon Musk has asked me to advise the new Government Efficiency Department. I'd love to help bring sanity back!" The popular X account Clandestine replied to Paul's post. "Nice to have you involved, sir. It's been a long time coming," Clandestine said. On November 22, Paul shared on X that Musk had reached out to solicit his input on DOGE, "Elon Musk asked me to advise for the new Government Efficiency Department. I really want to help bring sobriety back!" he wrote. The renowned X account Clandestine replied: "Very pleased to have you on board, sir. It's been a long time coming", Clandestine commented. Another person replied: Can we fire 87,000 armed IRS employees right now? Aside from Paul, his son, Senator Rand Paul (R-KY), also explained that he "completely supports" helping DOGE reduce government spending. "I completely support and will do anything I can to help them," Paul told Fox News. "It's a monster, a giant monster, but can you reduce it? Absolutely, you can reduce it. You can reduce it through attrition, you can reduce it through firing people. Some parts will disappear and you won't know." Despite the ambitious vision outlined for the Government Efficiency Department, the feasibility of such comprehensive reforms remains a formidable challenge. With the federal bureaucracy being described as a 'monster' by even future reformers, skeptics may question whether this initiative, even under such high-level leadership, can truly tame such a vast administrative machinery. The promise of a streamlined government may have to confront significant barriers in reality.
