Don't let Nvidia dominate! Amazon founder Bezos and Samsung invest in AI software and hardware integration start-up Tenstorrent
The world is now divided into two, one is the AI food chain deployed by NVIDIA in various industries, and the other is the new startup attempting to challenge NVIDIA's dominant position in AI.
AI hardware and software integrated start-up Tenstorrent has secured $693 million in Series D funding, bringing the company's valuation to over $2.6 billion. The new round of funding was led by Samsung Securities and AFW Partners, with other investors including Hyundai Motor and Amazon founder Bezos.
Tenstorrent will use the newly raised funds to organize an engineering team and develop AI training servers. Tenstorrent plans to release a new AI processor every two years and has signed customer contracts totaling nearly $150 million.
Jim Keller, the current CEO of Tenstorrent, is a well-known processor expert who has worked on CPUs and AI processors at AMD, Tesla, and Apple, focusing on developing next-generation AI hardware and CPUs.
Tenstorrent was founded in 2016 and is one of the many startups vying for the AI chip market dominated by Nvidia.
About Tenstorrent: Building efficient computing for AI
Tenstorrent is known for producing RISC-V1 IP (Ascalon) and AI IP (Tensix), as well as high-performance computing (HPC) semiconductors. Their IP designs can scale from milliwatts to megawatts, providing outstanding efficiency and performance.
Tenstorrent is a next-generation high-performance computing startup that builds computer hardware for artificial intelligence. Headquartered in North America, it has offices in Toronto, Austin, and Silicon Valley, as well as global offices in Belgrade, Tokyo, Bangalore, Singapore, and Seoul. Tenstorrent brings together experts in AI software, computer architecture, chip design, and advanced systems. Tenstorrent is backed by companies like Eclipse Ventures and Real Ventures.
Features of RISC-V1 IP (Ascalon)
Tenstorrent's RISC-V1 IP (Ascalon) is an Open Source instruction set. Tenstorrent's TT-Ascalon, based on RISC-V, is developed with flexibility. It can scale from a high-performance eight-wide to a compact, efficient two-wide. The Tensix core, which powers AI accelerators, is also scalable, aiming to form a grid that can expand to any number of cores as needed.
Tenstorrent and LG cooperate
On November 12 this year, LG and Tenstorrent announced an expanded partnership to develop single-chip (SoC) and systems for the global market based on the original chip project. LG stated that through the collaboration, the design and development efficiency of customized artificial intelligence chips for products and services can be enhanced, realizing the vision of 'Affectionate Intelligence' in LG's goals, enhancing artificial intelligence home appliances and smart home solutions, and expanding future mobile and commercial application scenarios.
