Exploring the Current Status and Future of Encryption Venture Capital

Despite the fluctuations in the cryptocurrency market, private equity investment remains an important pillar of industry development. This article will delve into the current state of cryptocurrency venture capital in 2023, explore the financing situation of startups in the second quarter, and focus on some recent noteworthy investment projects.

Encryption Venture Capital Financing Status

Despite the significant decline in the cryptocurrency market in 2022, venture capital firms still attracted a record $21.6 billion in new funding. However, since 2023, even though the prices of mainstream encryption assets such as Ethereum and Bitcoin have rebounded, venture capital financing has seen a cliff-like drop, decreasing by 98% compared to the same period last year.

The second quarter was equally tough for encryption startups. Data shows that the total amount of 382 transactions was only $2.34 billion, marking the fifth consecutive quarter of decline since the first quarter of 2022. At that time, as much as $12.14 billion was injected into encryption startups.

This ongoing downward trend indicates that investment in encryption startups may not have reached its bottom yet. The regulatory actions by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission regarding certain internet-related assets have also brought uncertainty to the industry. This regulatory pressure may affect the economics of "token warrants," which give investors the right to acquire a specific number of tokens at a predetermined price in the future. As a result, venture capital firms and their backers are more cautious about entering the encryption private placement market compared to previous years.

Liquidity tightening, strong regulation approaching, do encryption venture capitalists still care about cryptocurrencies?

June Popular Financing Projects

Despite the overall harsh environment, some high-quality projects have still secured substantial funding. Here are a few projects worth paying attention to:

Mythical Games

Financing Amount: 37 million USD Industry: Gaming

Mythical Games is a comprehensive Web3 game studio that has developed multiple encryption games and related products. Its game "NFL Rivals," developed in collaboration with the NFL, has performed exceptionally well and currently ranks high in the App Store's free sports game chart. This demonstrates the enormous market potential of encryption-native games, and Mythical Games is poised to become a breakthrough player in the industry.

Taiko

Financing amount: 22 million USD Industry: L2 scaling solutions

Taiko is developing a Type 1 zkEVM Layer 2 rollup solution that is highly compatible with Ethereum. Its uniqueness lies in prioritizing compatibility with the Ethereum architecture rather than minimizing prover costs. This allows protocols on Ethereum to seamlessly migrate to Taiko without the need to modify code or deployment environments.

Taiko also adopts a "decentralized from the start" approach, allowing anyone to participate in the chain's infrastructure and earn rewards without permission. This strategy, which is fully equivalent to Ethereum L1, is a unique attempt in the current market environment, although its prospects are unknown.

Maverick Protocol

Financing Amount: 9 million USD Industry: DeFi

Maverick is an AMM deployed across multiple chains, aimed at reforming the liquidity provision experience. It offers four automatic liquidity strategies that intelligently adjust liquidity based on preset parameters. Its unique in-bin liquidity concentration mechanism makes it an ideal trading venue for large traders and aggregators.

Maverick's innovation lies in balancing the needs of retail and professional market makers. It allows directional price deviations to influence the liquidity provision method, helping retail LPs achieve profitability. With the launch of the MAV token, investors can now participate in this project through the public market.

Despite the current challenges in the encryption venture capital environment, quality projects can still receive funding support. As the industry continues to mature and innovate, there is still ample room for development in the future. Investors and entrepreneurs need to stay vigilant while also seizing emerging opportunities.
